Women
Running Naked is a project that involves a healthy dose of
exhibition, a certain amount of innocent sexuality and twenty-four
frames from a single roll of film. Each and every frame from
a run is shown in succession without edit. The outright laughter,
the passers-by, the shake, the jiggle and the unpredictable
nature of the process is shown in totality for each shoot.
Each run goes rather quickly since the entire piece is shot
with an auto winder while I run close behind or slightly ahead
of the subject. It is very spontaneous except for a simple
walk-thru to make sure we do not run somewhere we shouldn't.
Although, I have nearly killed myself running through an abandoned
building while screaming, "Don't stop! Keep going!"
as I headed towards the ground after tripping on some bits
of wood.
I have
always been attracted to individuals that are completely at
ease with who they are. The women that participate in this
project enjoy a sense of abandon that so many of us fill our
lives only daydreaming about. When the project started, I
had some preconceived notions that turnout would be minimal
except for the extreme exhibitionists. But as the project
grew, it became apparent that there were fewer daydreamers
and more doers than I had originally thought. It was obvious
that so many of us maintain a certain amount of duality that
allows us to go about our daily corporate lives appearing
to be reserved, yet still willing to push the limits that
surround us all. The laughter and surprise I see when these
pieces are being viewed helps validate this point time and
time again. And with these viewings, someone undoubtedly wants
to do a run. The old adage about not judging a book by its
cover certainly applies here.

Harlan
Overlike is a Chicago-based photographer who is driven by
capturing those off moments we all fear may be witnessed by
others -- that point in time just before sneezing, falling
off the chair or getting distracted by the telephone.
Overlike's
sense of observation, balance and multiple realities meld
into images that are memorable, sometimes disturbing and always
moving. Exposing the randomness and freedom of allowing oneself
to be filmed while running naked is one of his current projects.

is currently represented by Echo
Gallery in Chicago. Women Running Naked is currently on
display at the gallery.
