I am a passionate believer that engagement, not isolationism, is required for a greater understanding and tolerance of other cultures. People around the world want their stories, their concerns, their fears, and their gratitude to be heard. I don't claim I am achieving lofty goals, but I believe it has the ability to foster greater understanding, tolerance and connection between people on this planet. It is not the differences that have drawn me to other cultures; it is the commonality of human emotions and life experiences that have irrevocably bonded me with the people who have allowed me into their lives. We are all tied together in a web that is intricate and complex and hopefully as journalists we can do more than merely highlight the differences among all of our cultures.
